Getting out of the house

It's been raining here for weeks.

We needed to shake things up. To get out of the house today.
So we headed to the beach.

It was unusually dark for a Summer morning, threatening to rain, but so beautiful.

I love seeing my boys run free. Like the wind.

And then Mother Nature came good on her threats and the heavens opened.

So we retreated to the new local library.

Lovely had already visited but it was the first time for Hug and I. This local library has been a local community dream for as long as we have lived in the area, which is now 13 years! It's thrilling to finally be able to walk inside.

I was immediately struck by the beautiful view at the end of the room.
Stunning.

We did a little schoolwork. The boys were more distracted that I would have hoped and it gave me great food for thought for our future travels. I will definitely need to flex our regular routines and style when we are living and learning on the road. These thoughts will be discussed and meditated on and grappled with here ad nauseum I am sure. Lol. I am a work in progress.

Regardless, we were  thrilled to be surrounded by books. We are all crazy for books. Libraries and bookstores thrill us so we were muchos happy.

The boys were excited to point out a copy of one of our current read-alouds, The Word Spy by Ursula Dubosarsky, sitting on the shelf.

What did you do today?

Travel planning with kids and coffee.

Last year I mentioned my wanderlust.

We were dreaming of a big trip. Penciled to be Europe 13-14.
It seemed all pie in the sky back then, silly even.
So far away and - really - could we? Should we?... Would we?

So we bit the bullet and did the only sensible thing. We bought tickets.
One way tickets at that.

Oh my. We. Were. Booked!!

Now we are in serious planning mode. Ahhhhhh, how I do love travel planning ;)

But our days and weeks are busy. And to-be-completely-honest we are tired at night.
Or working and tired.

So we have carved out Saturday mornings as dedicated family travel planning time. With coffee of course. 'Cos life is too short to live without coffee ;) Okay. I'm on a detox at the moment so no coffee for me. Sob. But I'm feeling the coffee-love so stick with me.

Hug quizzing L about where this poster may have been from... any guesses?!

We want our boys to be involved. I have borrowed a few of Lonely Planet's Not For Parents books from the library for them to pour over and we bring them along.

It's nice if you choose a good cafe to do all of this heady work.

Eventually, the boys ask for time on their iPods. Their weekends-only treat. Or they return to their current reading book. Which gives us a little extra time.

That's code for time when we can actually focus. Of course.

Have you traveled with your kids?
Do you have a dream destination or plans-in-the-midst?

Do share! x

Feeling blue

Lovely.
Feeling blue.

He couldn't have a milkshake.
That makes me blue sometimes too.

Behind the Scenes with RM on Facebook and Twitter

Blogging is a time-consuming business isn't it!
And I just never seem to have enough time to post everything I would like to here.

I am finding, however, little pockets of time for facebook updates.

Here are some of the recent 'behind the scenes' photos I've uploaded to the Adventures of a Rainbow Mama facebook page.  Please 'like' us and say helloooo!

My Valentines. For my Valentine.

I was given a set of Montessori Geometric Form Cards to accompany my home-made Geometric Solids by another homeschooling mama!! Given. Too kind. That was an exciting day :)

We've been receiving lots of parcels (we love the postman!) from The Book Depository. Painting and Drawing in Waldorf Schools was one of our latest arrivals.

Doing Forensic Science experiments and investigating the Electromagnetic Spectrum with a 'Spy Pen' and a UV torch. The ink shows up really well on newsprint so we took turns hiding messages for each other in the local paper.

Hug wrote me a sweet message in the crossword. Awwww...

Hug completed his first Currclick Lego Club for Homeschoolers class of the year.  Believe it or not my boys luuuuuurve Lego ;) Conveniently Currclick have added a new time slot to their class schedule which means the class is at 1pm (Australia EST time) rather than 6am. Hooray!

Scheduling.
Planning.
Piling ;)

I'm in *LOVE* with our new book shelf!

We are packing our lunches this year! It's revolutionised my days! No more trying to organise meals in the gaps between lessons = Mama gets a break too :)

As much as I might *want* to blog regularly, something usually gets in the way. Oh, yeah, that's it - that little thing called LIFE ;)

Jokes aside, I do love this blog :) and I do wish I blogged more.

And I really would like to continue to grow and connect with the amazing blogging community out there. The world is bursting with inspiring mamas (and papas!) sharing their wisdom and adventures and thoughts on so many things that I thrive on: travel / education / fashion / design / food / life...

It's just the fitting it into an already full life that I struggle with.
I'm sure I'm not alone :)  How do YOU make space in your life for blogging and staying connected to the blogging community?

If you haven't already done so, please 'like' our facebook page (Oh! I almost forgot the twitter page :) and leave me a message in the comments here with a link to your own blog if you have one. I look forward to hanging out!

Hello. Self-portrait.

Hello. Hi.

There you are. Here I am.
I wanted to slip from behind the camera for a moment and say hello.

I just found this photo on my camera roll - from a beautiful afternoon a few weeks back when the late afternoon sunshine was lighting up our bedroom like it was some kind of byzantine cathedral.
Self-portrait.
January 2013.

Do you remember to photograph yourself?
